NEMA, security agencies avert fuel tanker disaster in Rivers State

A disastrous fire outbreak was forestalled Thursday morning at the popular Igwuruta Roundabout in Rivers State, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

A statement this afternoon by Yushau Shuaib, NEMA Head of Media and Publicity, indicates that the quick mobilization of the Fire service, Police and Army averted what may have been a massive inferno.

He noted that “a fuel tanker loaded with PMS fell and spilled its content around 1am Thursday morning”.

The spot was the same place a similar incident occurred in April. Many lives were reportedly lost in that mishap.

Shuaib said the swiftness of rescuers who arrived the scene immediately after receiving a distress call in the dead of the night helped the situation.

The Zonal Information Officer of NEMA, Roberts Ekemini who was at the scene of the rescue operation said: “No life was lost during operation, but security agencies had a hectic time preventing people from scooping fuel as many of them actually came with containers and keg to get free petrol.”
