“I’m optimistic we’ll get to a happy conclusion” – Wenger says Walcott is set to sign new deal

Arsene Wenger has admitted that Theo Walcott is close to signing a new Arsenal deal.

According to various reports in British tabloids, the England international has agreed to a much improved four-and-half-year £90,000-a-week deal, which will tie him to the club till 2017.

Although Walcott has not put pen to paper, Wenger is optimistic about the likelihood.

“We’re on a good road with Theo’s negotiations,” the 63-year-old told reporters. “I’m more optimistic this week than last week. The discussions have progressed smoothly but slowly.

“As long as nothing is signed, you are cautious. I’m optimistic we’ll get to a happy conclusion.”

Wenger also denied claims that Walcott was holding out for a clause in the new contract, which will see him play through the middle more.

“I can see Theo Walcott playing more up front but he never made it a condition to sign or not,” he said.

“He just wants to play. He is happy to play on the flank as well. I see him playing more up front”
