Educational Advancement Centre in Ibadan begins School On-Air programme on Monday

In its bid to reverse the high rate of failure in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in the country, an Ibadan, Oyo state based educational center, has said that it will, as from Monday, inaugurate its West African Examination Council’s ‘School on Air’ programme.

DailyPost gathered that the programme will hold on working days between 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm and scheduled for broadcast on free to air Satellite Network.

The Director, Educational Advancement Centre, Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, said, “We have a vision of a better country comprising competent individuals. We look at the educational terrain and we see that there are some people whose fate had been blocked as a result of failure in the external examination.

“As you can see, almost 1.2m candidates failed last year. Some that we thought passed had not actually passed because they didn’t pass relevant subjects that could qualify them for admission into higher institutions.

“Most pupils that we see as failures now can make positive impact if helped. If not helped they will make negative impact on the society. We saw the need for intervention in teachers’ quality because they cannot discharge quality education. There is no magic in passing an examination; your preparation matters.”

Pastor Bamgbose explained that core subjects including English, Mathematics and Biology, would be taught, adding that besides the direct-to-home satellite TV broadcast, those with internet services on their telephone would have access to the lesson.

The Director said, “Apart from the cost of subscription to the satellite TV, the programme is free to air and costs nothing. An organisation has volunteered to sponsor some schools in Delta State.”

He however noted that those who require extra services, (feedback) would pay certain amount of money.

Commenting further, the Coordinator of the programme, Mr. Kayode Maliki, said, “The programme is a little new. So many pupils will enjoy it. We are using seasoned professionals in the various fields.

Dr Kayode Fayemi

No fewer than 500 part time students of Ekiti State University, formerly University of Ado Ekiti have petitioned the state Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, who is the visitor to the university.

DailyPost gathered that the Department of Public Administration, part time students completed their studies for the past 18 months but have not seen their results till date.

The students however appealed to the State Governor to assist them in the release of the results.

According to 32-year-old Ubaka Ehidu, one of the affected students, part-time students who finished along with them 18 months ago in other departments received their results in October, 2012.

Ehidu blamed the Coordinator of Public Administration Department, Olatunji Ebenezer Olaoye for the delay in the release of their results since July 2011.

He further explained that problem started when Olaoye who was a doctorate student at the University of Lagos, failed to submit their results to the University Senate, without which they cannot graduate.

Ehidu added that all efforts to locate the Coordinator by some lecturers and students’ representatives at the Department of Political Science, UNILAG were not successful.

“We learnt the University Senate will meet January this year. If our level coordinator (Olaoye) failed to submit our results before the January meeting, only God knows when we shall graduate,” he said.

On behalf of his colleagues, he appealed to Governor Fayemi to prevail on the university to release their results.

All calls made to contact Ebenezer Olaoye via his mobile phones were not successful as his phones were permanently switched off.

Benue State University College of Health Sciences’ students apologize to management over protest

Posted by Unknown | Thursday, 20 December 2012 | Posted in ,

The President, Benue State University Medical Students’ Association (BESUMSA), on behalf of medical students of the institution have apologised to the Vice Chancellor and the Senate of the university over their recent protests.

This was communicated in a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor and signed by the association’s President, Kawen Pededo and Secretary General, Evaristus Antiev.

The letter reads in part: “I humbly write on behalf of the entire medical students of the Benue State University to tender our
unreserved and sincere apology to the VC who doubles as the Chairman of the Senate, her lieutenants and all members of the Senate for the recent protests we embarked upon.

“Since inception of the College of Health Sciences in 2003, efforts have been made by the state government, the Benue State University and the Teaching Hospital managements to ensure the graduation of medical students.

“Our protests negated respect and constituted embarrassment to the state government, the Benue State University particularly the VC, and the Senate. We are not oblivious of the magnitude of our arrogance. Words alone cannot express how sober we are, but our apologies are for your kind considerations.”

The Governor of the State,Commissioner of Health, Commissioner of Education, Commissioner of Police, Secretary to the State Government, the University Senate and the Provost of the College were all copied in the letter.

Recently, precisely in October, students of Benue State University College of Health Sciences took to the road to protest the inability of the Teaching Hospital to secure accreditation, which had made the students over-stay in the school.

Furthermore, during the protest, it would be recalled that the VC, Professor Charity Angya, the Provost, Professor Shima Gyoh, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Abraham Malu and the Secretary to the State Government, David Salisu, were not allowed into the Unversity’s College.

However, DailyPost gathered that the Teaching Hospital was granted full accreditation following an official visit by the Medical and Dental Council
of Nigeria to the institution while the protesting students were still at home.
