Airtel launches HD voice service in Nigeria

Posted by Unknown | Sunday, 23 December 2012 | Posted in

One of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria has announced the roll-out of High Definition (HD) Voice Service, a network innovation that allows customers to experience exceptional voice quality across 3.75G locations in the country.

With the deployment, Airtel becomes the first mobile operator in Nigeria to launch HD Voice service in the country. The HD voice service will complement the operator’s HD data service, enabling telecoms consumers to enjoy a rich telephony experience.

HD Voice enables mobile operators to clearly differentiate their service offering with high quality voice calls on mobile networks. With HD, customers can talk normally and be heard clearly, without having to raise their voice, even in noisy environments.

Airtel says the service will enable more Nigerians enjoy a more fulfilling Christmas celebration and enter the New Year in grand style as they connect to unite with friends, family members and loved ones across the country.

Speaking on the network innovation, the Chief Operating Officer, Deepak Srivastava said Airtel is committed to improving the quality and coverage of its network and also building the most robust network Infrastructure in Nigeria.

“We will keep raising the level of our investment in Nigeria. Today, we have the largest and widest 3.75G coverage in the country and we have recorded several milestones in network quality improvement and general customer experience.

“Only recently, we recorded huge success in our 4G Trial test in Lagos and now we have deployed HD Voice service across key 3.75G locations in the country. Indeed, this demonstrates our commitment to Nigerians, testifying to our corporate vision of becoming the most loved brand in the daily lives of Nigerians,” he said.

HD Voice, or wideband audio, refers to the next-generation of voice quality for telephony. HD Voice more accurately reproduces the human voice with a wider frequency range. The result is significantly more natural sounding speech and a wider range of sounds promoting audio clarity and clear conversation.

With HD Voice, consumers can perceive the difference and the general sentiment is that the experience is more of “being in the same room” with the person on the other end of the phone line.

Customers with smartphones that support HD functionality can straight away experience the magic. Some of the handsets supporting HD functions are the relatively newer models of Samsung, Blackberry, Iphone 5, HTC, Sony, Nokia among others

MTN Plans $1.3 billion Upgrade For 2013

Posted by Unknown | Friday, 14 December 2012 | Posted in

South African telecommunications firm MTN is planning to improve its facilities nationwide investing about $1.3 billion for 2013. This is in a resolve to ensure that it maintains its capacity and leadership in the Nigerian mobile technology market.

This investment is strategically positioned to give its 45 million subscribers more valuable and cutting edge services, even as it plans to gain more leverage in the mobile market through various services planned ahead.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Company Mr Brett Goschen believes the investment is a worthwhile and incisive one which would go a long way to assert the dominance of the network through its vast and upgraded facilities.

He said this while commissioning a new customer experience centre tagged ‘Yello City’.

His words: “We have invested $1.3 billion on the network in 2012 alone. This covers the extensive network optimisation and swap out exercise, which we embarked on in June 2012 and which is now at an advanced stage. And by 2013, we hope to double the investment by putting in another $1.3bn for infrastructure expansion.”

Infrastructure and up to date facilities have been of utmost priority to the South African group as it realizes how stiff the competition is with the other Telcos like Airtel, Globacom, Etisalat, and Visafone.

2012 witnessed some slight challenges for the network in ensuring customers enjoy access to good network and value added services. At the Enugu NCC parliament the customers complained majorly about the MTN network service delivery but with the decision to sustain the investment level in Infrastructure, the Company is definitely poised to show market leadership.

Mr. Akin Braithwaite, the Customer Relations Executive, MTN Nigeria, speaking on the Yello City Initiative said “The Initiative is much larger than our services and retail outlets giving more value to customers”.

The CEO Mr. Goschens went unto apologize to Nigerians for the poor service they experienced at several occasions from the Network which affected service level expectation. He assured its subscribers in the Nation that MTN will step up its game and improve its network quality.

MTN, Glo, Etisalat and Airtel May Face more Punitive Fines – Minister

Posted by Unknown | Monday, 3 December 2012 | Posted in

Omobola Johnson, Communications and IT Minister

The Federal Government may levy more fines against telecommunications companies if their service hasn’t improved by the time service quality checks are made in December, Communications Technology Minister Omobola Johnson said.

The telecommunications regulator fined companies including MTN Group Ltd. (MTN) andEmirates Telecommunications Corp. (ETISALAT) a combined 1.17 billion naira ($7.4 million) in May for failing to meet minimum service standards. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with more than 160 million people, is targeting voice penetration of close to 100 percent by 2014-2015.

“Fining isn’t something we want to do every six months, so we’re working very closely with them,” Johnson said in a Nov. 26 interview in the southern city of Warri. “Many of the companies don’t want to get fined again, but if they do not meet those quality of service indicators, they will get fined,” the minister said, adding that most customers say the service hasn’t improved.

The Nigerian Communications Commission fined South Africa- based MTN and Abu Dhabi-based Emirates, or Etisalat, 360 million naira each for failing to meet the service standards. New Delhi- based Bharti Airtel Ltd. (BHARTI) was fined 270 million naira and domestic operator Globacom Ltd. 180 million naira.

The regulator threatened last year to stop operators from signing new customers unless they reduced the number of dropped calls and improved connections. MTN and Etisalat cited lack of power and sabotage as reasons for the poor service.

Power Cuts

While the companies need to increase their spending on infrastructure, the ministry is trying to “remove a lot of delays and bureaucratic bottlenecks that are in their way,” Johnson said. Power cuts are a daily occurrence in Nigeria, where demand for electricity is almost double the supply of about 4,000 megawatts.

MTN is investing $1.4 billion in Nigeria this year to improve infrastructure and capacity. Etisalat said after it was fined in May that it will spend more than $500 million on its network.

The ministry has banned some sales promotions, including lotteries for free minutes, because they added pressure to the system, Johnson said.

If the necessary infrastructure is put in place, voice penetration should reach almost 100 percent by 2014 – 2015, compared with about 70 percent now, she said. Data penetration should reach 30 percent by 2017 from 6 percent now.

Stock Exchange

Nigeria wants international companies operating in the country to list on the Nigerian Stock Exchange “to democratize the wealth and the revenue that they’ve generated in Nigeria,” Johnson said. While none of the main four telecommunications operators are listed on the exchange, the authorities have stopped short of compulsory listing “because that will be seen as targeting telecommunications companies, and really and truly, it wasn’t a requirement or a condition for when they were investing, particularly the international ones,” she said.

The government should encourage companies to list by standardizing regulatory requirements with global exchanges and removing barriers, the minister said.

“We’re looking at a lot of things that detract or discourage investors including some of the shareholder activism that we’ve seen in the recent past, again managing that much better than we’ve done,” she said.

MTN set to regulate BIS traffic for heavy users

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

Some MTN Nigeria subscribers may find themselves surprised with slower data speeds. As of today, MTN is introducing new measures that will manage usage speeds for its BIS users that “regularly download and stream large amounts of content outside of MTN’s fair usage policies,”. MTN says the actions are necessary because, those users are impacting MTN’s network capacity.

This is not the first time a carrier has regulated BIS traffic for their subscribers. A few months ago Vodacom implemented similar measures, by moving its BlackBerry users to a new system that would prevent users from abusing its BIS services. SA carriers are concerned about BlackBerry users abusing their fair usage policy, and are taking steps to stop it.

Vodacom reported that one user managed to download over 332GB of data in just one month. Now that’s a far cry from the average users data usage per month, but carriers like MTN and Vodacom are seeing increased data usage from BlackBerry power users and are taking steps to control it.

Bandwidth throttling is nothing new among ISP’s, but is fairly new for mobile carriers. With more carriers implementing bandwidth throttling one has to wonder if their carrier is next.

Nigeria has the fastest internet speed in West Africa

Posted by Unknown | Thursday, 29 November 2012 | Posted in

Nigeria’s telecoms and IT sector has proven to have massive growth potential in the coming years; but the country must first overcome a number of key industry challenges before the sector can fulfill its potential. One of the largest challenges is the lack of reliable power supply to the region; however, deficiencies in ICT infrastructure must continue to be addressed.

Software piracy remains evidently rampant within the country as per a recent study released; the commercial value of unlicensed software installed in 2011 represented an 82% rate of piracy, nearly double the global rate of 42%.

The Nigerian government has launched a series of initiatives to reinforce the information and communications technology (ICT) sector within the region. These efforts include major investment programmes and partnerships to assist the sector in addressing some of the challenges that prevent the growth and development of the ICT sector. With the arrival of landed gateway cables into Nigeria, the radical innovation is contributing to improving ICT infrastructure and bridging the digital divide.

The 14,000-km fibre-optic submarine cable, named the West African Cable System (WACS), has a capacity of 5.12 terabytes per second (TBps), and began service earlier this year.

With promises of growth and development throughout the ICT sector in West Africa, Nigeria appears to be spearheading the growth as the latest state of the internet report was released. The recent report showed that Nigeria has overtaken South Africa in terms of Internet speed in less than eleven years after reforming its communications networks and market. The report also revealed that Nigeria has an average connection speed of 322kbps with a peak rate of 5674kbps; while South Africa’s average speed is faster at 496kbps, the country’s peak speed is only half that of Nigeria, at 2172kbps.

With strong support from its government and keen interest from major private sector players and the outlook for Nigeria, West African country’s ICT sector looks promising. As it continues to grow, there will be significant investment opportunities in the areas of infrastructural development, research and training, as well as cyber-security.

Nigeria boasted over 125 million total connected lines before the end of the last quarter in 2011 with its contribution to making the country one of the fastest growing economies of the world. These significant events included the implementation of SIM card registration by the Nigerian Communications Commission, e-registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the introduction of the mobile money policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The information and communication technologies (ICTs) markets within West Africa are being revolutionised by the rapid adoption of Internet-based services, wireless technologies and the convergence of previously separate ICTs including broadcasting, computing and communication.

The anticipated IT Leaders West Africa Summit will focus on the many challenges currently facing West Africa’s ICT industry, preventing enterprises within the region from reaching the international standards of first world nations. The summit will address today’s top ICT and operations issues, and technological advancements impacting the enterprise with strategic guidance and actionable tactics.

“I want SweeftSMS to be Nigeria’s number one sms marketing company” – 22 year-old undergraduate

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

In a country where the youth and undergraduates are largely dependent on relatives and family members for survival, some have decided to stand out, preferring to go into business in order to have an alternative source of income and/or make a career out of it.

One of such enterprising minds is Miss Adesanya Temitope, a 400-level Computer Science and Engineering student of Obafemi Awolowo University and Founder of SWEEFTSMS, an SMS marketing company.

The company which started full operations in April 2012, provides short messaging services to individuals, schools, companies among others.

In an interview with DailyPost, Temitope, the brain behind the initiative said: “I just got tired of doing nothing. I was eager to start something that would be known globally. After trying many things out and doing researches on a number of businesses, I stormed on this telecommunication business and it just suited my type of person”

On what it takes to use the service, the young lady said: “Signing up on Sweeftsms is absolutely free. You also get free sms units to test our system. We help you reach the world in just some seconds without stress, grow your business on a mobile scale, send bulk sms to both Nigerian and International networks and help you invest in sms marketing.”

In terms of the uniqueness of Sweeftsms, the young entrepreneur stated that, “You have access to your own control panel and can manage your messages yourself. All you need do is come on board and see what we have to offer.”

“Also, you can become one of our valued resellers simply by checking our resellers page on www.sweeftsms.com.”

“Everything you need to know including our contact is there on the site.”

When asked her vision for the company, Temitope said: “I see my company being at the top of sms marketing companies in Nigeria; when you think bulk sms, you should think sweeftsms. Presently, most people are unaware of the usefulness of sms marketing. They forget that even the big telecommunication and software companies use this means to reach out to them. We all get at least one message from these major networks daily. Facebook, Google, Yahoo and others invest heavily in sms marketing. This is because every mobile phone ever made can receive a text message and the best thing is that everyone owns or wants one.”

“One of the things I have planned to do is to introduce an sms voting system from Sweeftsms (not the short code method), developing an sms chat application, an sms alert systems and so on,” she added.

Miss Adesanya described herself as determined, hardworking, persistent and a good manager; according to her, the sky is definitely the limit.

Using plugable usb modems as far as i am concerned still remain the easiest and flexible way to get your PC connected to the internet unlike using WLAN, Cable fiber etc.

For instance, if you have AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodafone and MTN Sim cards and lets assume there is a bad network reception (poor or weak internet connection signal) on AT&T, vodafone or MTN and you are having AT&T usb modem that only allows their simcard; What would you do in this bad case scenario?

Your option may be to go and buy a tmobile usb modem as well and what if the same thing happens to tmobile, your option may also be to go and get usb modem for the other networks. The question is why would be going through all these bitter experiences when you can simple unlock one of your modem free, configure it with other network operator internet settings thereafter you browse and surf the internet with?

Free Web Hosting, Free Domain Name Advantages and Disadvantages

Posted by Unknown | | Posted in

Choosing the right web hosing company can be difficult. Perhaps you are the type who is interested getting free web design and free web hosting for your new website / blog. You desire to test the cool breeze of the great WWW before you can start investing any money into your site, so you’re planning to use the cheapest and free hosting service possible to get started with.

While there are some advantages to using a free services, such as no charge to put up a website and sometimes you can adjust its templates to fit your site needs, there are also some disadvantages of using free hosting service.

“At the end of this post i ll provide you with some free domain name registrars and free web host you can host your site with”

Now let’s take a look at these four major disadvantages of free web hosting and free web design so you can make the right decision before at the right time.

1. No Full Ownership.

With free webhosting and webdesign, you have no ownership right over your site, though its your site. The host can remove your account at any time without notice or warning and you can do nothing about it.

Free things do come and go without notice, so will your website / blog if you’re not careful.

You don’t have control over what happens to your site, lets say the site host was to fold or decides to sell the hosting company to another company.

It’s Your Small Business!

Imagine yourself spending months or even years working on your website design outlook, building some web pages, making good posts (if its blog, blogger or blogspot), building countless backlinks, doing SEO as well as a following of targeted visitors, only to have it removed within seconds without warning. For personal sites this might not really mean much harm; however, with a business site it’s a risk you can’t afford to take cos you will lose all you have laboured for.

2. Your Are Limited.

With free hosting you will be limited to certain features, this will also limit your chances of growing big.

Take for instance you want to place some advert ads of yours, or sell some ads space to some other companies. Most free host do not support this.

You are limited in bandwidth and Disc Space as some gives you a very little disc space and bandwidth.

You may not be allowed to use custom domain e. g. www.infoloaded.com, instead you will allowed with the choice of subdomain e. g. www.business.infoloaded.com which doesn’t speak good about your site.

You may not be able to create custom email (admin@infoloaded.com).

Your site is prone to virus attacks, this as a result of hosting so many sites on the same server, if other sites get attacked from the server it will affect yours too.

3.  Ads, Banners Might Overtake Your Site:

Most hosting company advertising “free web design and free web hosting” aren’t really for free! They are into some advertise business and uses those free sites to sell their ads. Though might not have problem with this if your site / blog is for personal use only. But with a site that’s designed to sell products / services, those ads can be a problem to you.

Customer Trust and Confidence.

Those ads might be displayed in areas of your site where you wouldn’t want them to appear. They might flash or move around so as to catch the attention of your visitors and can distract your visitors.

It can hinder sales, divert visitors / traffic away or cause visitors to think your site is not professional.

Some visitors might recognize it as a free website and question your company’s trustworthiness (this really s*ucks).

Advertising on your site may include competitors’ ads or some offensive ads that you wouldn’t ordinarily want displayed on your site. but you can’t do anything about it cos you got no control over these ads and where they might appear!

4. The Overall Service Is Always Poor

When you get anything for free (just like some cheap stuffs) don’t expect much good service from it. Your site might be going ON and OFF as a result of server downtime, this happens a lot with free web hosting service. This means when visitors try to go to your site, they’ll receive a error message stating that the site’s server is down, temporery out of service or similar error message that’s annoying.

You also might experience some problems with your site’s design, forms, graphics themes, etc. The host of such companies is likely not ready to help you in anything. This is because they often have thousands of users hosted on their free services and can’t afford to attend to all of them.

They also pay less attention to free account owners compared to the paid users.

Paid Web hosting vs Free web hosting:

Consider the gains and loses mentioned above before ever you begin designing your site and hosting it with a free service. If you own a business, the best way to make it big with a website or blog business is to pay for hosting, design and adomain name so you can establish a professional report from the start.

You can visit Hostgator for qaulity web hosting service, there are other good hosts you can trust your business with, just google them, review them see if you can coupe with them.
