Varsity threatens legal action against absconding lecturers

 

The management of Akwa Ibom State University has expressed its displeasure over the behaviour of some lecturers of the institution sponsored for their post graduation studies abroad who have refused to return to the institution after completing their studies, and has threatened to initiate a legal action against their families.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Sunday Peters made this known on Friday in Abak, while discussing about the Obio Okpa campus of the university.

Prof. Peters said, “Many have refused to come back after the training; some are coming back in batches.

“We shall, through the embassies of the countries, get them repatriated,’’ he vowed.

He added that “Six of them have returned and started work on both
campuses of the university,’’ but did not disclose the total number of absconded lecturers.

Furthermore, he affirmed that the institution has been able to meet with the National Universities Commission (NUC) requirement regarding the requisite number of lecturers for each department.

He said, “With the menace of Boko Haram in the northern part of Nigeria, we have a lot of southerners applying to come to our university.

“Nevertheless, staffing Akwa Ibom University is not a problem; there are enough lecturers for now. We also have adjunct lecturers and those on sabbatical leave,’’ he concluded
